Born on July 19, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Babers played collegiate football as a running back and defensive back at the University of Hawai'i.

His coaching career began with various assistant coaching positions across several programs, including roles at Eastern Illinois, Purdue, Arizona, San Diego State, and Texas A&M, among others. Babers is particularly noted for his time as the head coach at Eastern Illinois University from 2012 to 2013, where he helped the team achieve significant success, including a deep run in the FCS playoffs.

Babers then became the head coach at Bowling Green State University in 2014. There, he implemented an up-tempo, spread offense that led the team to a Mid-American Conference Championship in 2015.

In December 2015, Dino Babers was named the head coach at Syracuse University. Under his leadership, Syracuse's football program made significant strides, highlighted by a 10-win season in 2018 and a victory in the Camping World Bowl.
